Kybella vs. CoolMini™

Kybella vs. CoolMini™

In a previous blog post, we discussed the amazing results that can be achieved with Kybella, the first FDA-approved injectable treatment to get rid of a “double-chin”, or moderate to severe fat deposits below the chin known as submental fat. But Kybella isn’t the only treatment that has been approved by the FDA to get rid of that stubborn double chin; CoolSculpting® has an applicator called the CoolMini™ that has been approved for eliminating smaller areas of fat, like those underneath the chin. So what’s the difference between Kybella and CoolMini™? Is one better than the other? Keep reading to find out!

Kybella is an injectable form of deoxycholic acid, a substance that is already naturally present in your body. The role of deoxycholic acid is to help the body absorb dietary fats. By injecting deoxycholic acid into the targeted areas of excess fat, the cell membrane of the fat cell is destroyed. After the cell destruction, macrophages clear the fragments and lipids as well as stimulate the production of collagen through fibroblast recruitment. The result? A smoother, sleeker appearance of the targeted area.

The CoolMini™ is a smaller version of the CoolSculpting® device. It’s used to eliminate diet and exercise-resistant fat in areas such as under the chin and neck that keep you from looking and feeling your absolute best.
This non-invasive treatment involves a controlled cooling technique called cryolipolysis, commonly known as “fat freezing”. It destroys fat cells by exposing them to a temperature of +5 to -5°C. An easy way to picture how this works is by thinking of a fat cell as a water balloon, with the balloon material being the cell wall. The CoolSculpting® procedure freezes the cell, which causes the cell wall to tear while simultaneously keeping the skin and surrounding tissues at a normal temperature so as not to cause any harm. The targeted fat cells “thaw” after the treatment and the contents are processed and released by the body, which permanently eliminates the unwanted fat cells. The unique hand-held design of the Cool Mini™ allows Dr. Krant to easily and comfortably treat smaller facial areas like under the chin and neck.

CoolMini™

Both Kybella and CoolMini™ are proven to safely and effectively eliminate excess fat in the chin and neck area with no downtime and minimal side effects. With both treatments you can expect some redness and swelling, although it has been reported that side effects go away slightly faster after the CoolMini™ treatment. Another advantage the CoolMini™ procedure has over Kybella is that no needles are required, which is ideal for patients who dislike injections. Ultimately, the best way to decide which treatment is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jessica Krant, serving patients in Manhattan, New York City, and the tristate area.
