An Insider’s Guide to Restylane® Fillers in NYC

Restylane fillers are a popular choice for individuals looking to enhance facial freshness with minimal downtime. At Art of Dermatology at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York, in Manhattan, Dr. Jessica Krant specializes in providing personalized Restylane® filler treatments tailored to each patient’s unique needs. In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about Restylane fillers, from how they work to the different variations available and who can benefit from these treatments.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is a brand of dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that supports collagen bundles and helps to maintain volume and hydration. These fillers are used to smooth out wrinkles, add volume to the cheeks and lips, and improve overall facial contour. Restylane treatments are minimally invasive, providing immediate results with little to no downtime, making them an excellent option for those seeking quick and effective cosmetic improvements.

How does Restylane work?

Restylane works by injecting sterile hyaluronic acid gel into targeted areas of the face. The hyaluronic acid attracts and binds to water molecules, adding volume and fullness to the skin. This process helps to smooth out wrinkles and folds, enhance lips, and restore lost volume in the cheeks and under eye area. The effects of Restylane are immediate, and the results can last from six months to over a year, depending on the specific product used and the area treated.

Comparing Restylane Variations

Original Restylane

Original Restylane is the foundation of the Restylane family of fillers. It is primarily used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth). This versatile filler can also be used to enhance lip volume and contour, providing a natural-looking enhancement.

Restylane Lyft®

Restylane Lyft®, is designed to add volume and lift to the cheeks and midface area. It has a thicker consistency than the original Restylane, making it ideal for deeper injections that require more structural support. Restylane Lyft is also used to treat age-related volume loss in the hands, providing a rejuvenated appearance, though at this time Dr. Krant does not perform hand filler treatments.

Restylane® Silk

Restylane® Silk is specifically formulated for lip enhancement and the treatment of fine lines around the mouth. It has a smoother consistency than other Restylane products, allowing for precise and subtle results. Restylane Silk is perfect for patients looking to achieve natural-looking lip augmentation and smooth out delicate lines around the lips, but is known to have a higher risk of long lasting swelling.

Restylane-L®

Restylane-L® is similar to the original Restylane but contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to minimize discomfort during the injection process. This addition makes Restylane-L an excellent choice for patients who may be sensitive to pain or discomfort during their treatment. It is used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, just like the original Restylane, and is the most common form of Restylane that Dr. Krant uses.

Who is a candidate for Restylane?

Candidates for Restylane fillers are typically adults who are looking to address signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and volume loss. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the treatment. Restylane is suitable for individuals with various skin types and tones, and it can be used to enhance different areas of the face, including the cheeks, lips, and under-eye area.

Restylane Results and Recovery

The results of Restylane treatments are visible immediately after the procedure, with full results developing over the following days as any initial swelling subsides. Patients can expect smoother, more youthful-looking skin with restored volume and enhanced facial contours. The recovery process is generally minimal, with most patients experiencing mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects typically resolve within a few days, allowing patients to return to their normal activities almost immediately. As with all filler treatments, the possibility of filler being injected into the wrong location such as a deep blood vessel, leading to tissue necrosis and blindness, is a very serious risk. For this reason, filler treatment should be treated as an invasive procedure and only performed by an experienced board-certified physician MD or DO, ideally in a “core four” cosmetic speciality including dermatology, plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, or ENT/facial plastic surgery.
