Ruby Laser

Ruby laser treatment at Art of Dermatology at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York offers a precise, highly targeted way to clear unwanted brown spots, sun damage, and certain tattoos while preserving the surrounding healthy skin. With a board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Jessica Krant, patients can safely achieve clearer, more even-toned skin in a comfortable setting with peace of mind, knowing that in her office, Dr. Krant performs all laser treatments herself personally.

About Ruby Laser Treatment

A ruby laser is a (sometimes “Q-switched”) medical laser that uses a ruby crystal to emit directed beam of light at a 694 nm wavelength, which is highly attracted to brown pigment (melanin) in the skin. This selective targeting makes it ideal for treating sunspots, lentigines, and other brown lesions on the face, hands, and body with minimal impact on surrounding tissue.

Ruby laser treatments are part of a comprehensive menu of laser skin rejuvenation options that also include Fraxel Restore DUAL®, Clear + Brilliant®, PicoSure™, LaseMD, and vascular lasers for redness and broken blood vessels. This integrated approach allows Dr. Krant to match each patient’s unique needs with the most effective laser treatments in NYC.

Key Benefits of Ruby Laser

Ruby laser treatment is highly specific for brown pigment, making it especially effective for sunspots, lentigines, and other discrete brown lesions without widespread skin damage. It can improve overall skin clarity and tone by breaking up excess melanin, leading to a more radiant, even complexion over time. Sessions are typically short and focused, performed by an experienced dermatologist in NYC, with healing occurring as the treated spots darken, crust, and then fade as the skin repairs.

Because Art of Dermatology at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York also offers other laser treatments, patients may combine or sequence therapies to address both pigmentation and texture concerns for more comprehensive rejuvenation.

Who is a Candidate for Ruby Laser?

Ruby laser treatment is best suited for patients with lighter skin tones who have clearly defined brown spots, sun damage, or certain darker pigments that respond well to 694 nm light. The treatment is typically recommended for those seeking focused pigment removal rather than full-face resurfacing. For patients with darker skin tones, Dr. Krant may recommend the PicoSure or PicoSure:FOCUS Alexandrite laser, which has a longer 755nm wavelength, or an Nd:YAG (1064nm) laser, which help to protect darker natural skin tones better.

During your consultation with Dr. Jessica Krant, she will evaluate your skin type, medical history, and specific concerns to determine which laser treatment is most appropriate. Patients with significant redness, visible veins, or rosacea may be better served by vascular-focused options such as a dedicated vascular laser, excelV laser, VBeam laser, or intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacials. Patients looking for overall rejuvenation including texture smoothing may get some pigment benefit along with these goals by having nonablative fractional laser treatments with Fraxel Restore, Fraxel Dual, Clear + Brilliant, or LaseMD devices.

About Ruby Laser Treatments

Ruby laser treatments are performed in-office using a true laser device that delivers brief, high-energy pulses directly into targeted pigmented lesions. Most patients tolerate the procedure well, and topical or local anesthesia can be used when needed to enhance comfort, but is usually unnecessary.

Because Art of Dermatology at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York offers a full range of cosmetic laser treatments, protective eyewear, integrated cooling, and individualized settings help maximize safety and results. Treatment time and cost depend on the number and size of lesions being addressed, but many sessions can be completed relatively quickly compared to more extensive resurfacing procedures.

Results and Recovery

After ruby laser treatment, treated spots often appear darker initially, then form a light crust before flaking off as the skin heals. As this process unfolds, the underlying skin typically appears pink at first and then gradually clearer, with a noticeable reduction in brown discoloration.

Downtime is usually limited to a brief healing period, though strict sun protection is essential to prevent new pigmentation and protect your results. Many patients benefit from a series of sessions or from combining ruby laser with other laser rejuvenation for more global improvement in tone and texture.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ruby Laser

What exactly is a ruby laser, and how does it differ from other cosmetic lasers you offer?

The ruby laser is a laser that uses a ruby crystal to filter an emerging laser beam so that only a single wavelength of 694 nanometer (nm) light comes out of the handpiece. Like other true lasers (unlike IPL and BBL), the single wavelength beam is collimated, which means the beam stays together instead of scattering like light from a lightbulb. This means the energy can be aimed at a specific small target in a controlled way, and that is has enough organization to be able to penetrate the surface of the skin to just the right depth.

What skin concerns or conditions is the ruby laser best for treating?

The 694nm wavelength of a ruby laser (there are many different brands) is best used to target unwanted brown pigmentation in the skin. It is commonly used to treat lentigoes (lentigines) and other sun spots, and occasionally for other causes of pigment such as melasma or tattoos.

Can ruby laser also help with fine lines or overall skin rejuvenation, or is it mainly for discoloration?

Ruby lasers are not used to trigger new collagen formation or tighten skin.

How does the 694 nm wavelength work on pigmentation in the skin, and why is it chosen for this treatment?

Like all lasers and light-based device treatments, the specific wavelengths of light chosen to come from the device are chosen because the target in the skin generally contains the complementary color (on a color wheel, for example) and therefore is most likely to absorb rather than reflect the energy beam. This targeted absorption of energy heats and precisely injures the chosen target, while leaving surrounding tissue undamaged. This is called selective photothermolysis and is the process by which all lasers and filtered light devices work.

Am I a good candidate for ruby laser if I have a lighter/medium/darker skin tone?

Ruby lasers are very good at targeting pigment and not good at differentiating pigment. So for darker skin tones, they can be more risky and patients may be better off with longer wavelength lasers such as alexandrite (755 nm) or Nd:YAG (1064 nm). However, this should be discussed with your board-certified dermatologist physician directly, since each patient, background details, and skin targets are different.

Are there any skincare products or active ingredients (like retinoids or acids) I should stop before and after the procedure?

This should be discussed personally with your board-certified dermatologist prior to the laser procedure

How many ruby laser treatment sessions do patients typically need before seeing significant improvement?

Some patients achieve their goals after a single ruby laser session. Others need more. This will be dependent on the skin concerns, skin background tone, and other factors. Please discuss your expectations and questions with your board-certified dermatologist before having your laser treatment.

What does the ruby laser treatment feel like during the session?

Ruby laser treatments do not generally require any numbing and most often feel like a small rubber band flicking spots. However, numbing cream can be applied before treatment and will not interfere with the treatment or results.

How long does a typical ruby laser session take?

Ruby is most often used as a target spot laser, so the amount of time a ruby laser treatment session takes will depend on how many spots are being treated during the session.

How soon after my first ruby laser treatment should I expect to see visible changes in my pigmentation or skin tone?

It can take one to two months to determine whether the treatment worked to pull pigmented cells off the surface of the skin or whether more treatment sessions are needed.

What is the typical downtime after a ruby laser treatment?

As with any laser or light based treatment, there is a risk of burns and permanent scarring, so selecting an experienced board-certified dermatologist is especially important. After treatment, there is technically no downtime, though direct sunlight should be avoided for several weeks. Healing spots and light scabbing and peeling may persist for a few weeks, and these can be a bit difficult to cover with makeup so that should be taken into account when planning laser treatments.

How will my treated spots look right after and over the following days?

After treatment with ruby laser, the targeted spots will immediately be darker and slightly red and swollen. This is normal and means the laser was able to injure the targets. Over the following few days there may even be light scabbing at the treatment spots.
