What is Restylane-L?

Restylane-L is a clear injectable gel dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid and a small amount of lidocaine to reduce discomfort during treatment. It’s used to smooth facial lines and wrinkles like nasolabial folds and marionette lines, improve under-eye hollows, and add fullness to the lips.

How Does Restylane-L Work?

As a dermal filler, Restylane-L plumps up targeted areas of the skin to smooth away and fill in fine lines, wrinkles, and under-eye hollows. It can also be used to plump up the lips for a fuller pout.

Additionally, like all dermal fillers, it also helps to increase collagen and elastin production as a reaction to the stretch that fibroblasts feel when the filler is placed, making the skin more flexible and elastic and further improving the overall look and feel of the skin over the longer term.

Who is a Good Candidate for Restylane-L?

Most patients who come in to see Dr. Krant are good candidates for Restylane-L, since it is such a safe and basic filler. That said, to determine if Restylane-L is the right treatment for you, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Be in generally good health
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have visible fine lines and wrinkles
  • Have thin lips
  • Have a sunken or hollow under-eye area

What to Expect with Restylane-L Treatment

Restylane-L treatment is relatively quick and simple. To start, Dr. Krant and her staff will clean the treatment area. From there, Dr. Krant will use a very thin needle to inject the Restylane-L formula into your skin. Because Restylane-L contains lidocaine, no other anesthetic is necessary, but you will be offered topical numbing cream if desired. Most patients tolerate the treatment very well.

The number of injections you receive depends on the number of areas being treated and the results you’re looking for. As Dr. Krant is very precise, she only places a small amount of filler with each injection.

The biggest risk of any filler treatment is filler being injected into or pressing on deep blood vessels. This can cause disruption of blood flow to tissue leading to skin necrosis, blindness, or stroke. For this reason, filler treatment should always be taken seriously and treated with respect. Dr. Krant recommends only seeing a board-certified dermatologist physician, or one of the other core cosmetic physician specialists for filler treatment: plastic surgery, ENT/facial plastic surgery, or oculoplastic surgery. These are specialties of physicians who have completed MD or DO medical school and a full residency with possible additional fellowship training, who have facial surgery as part of their original training, so their understanding of facial anatomy is the most robust.

Recovery & Results

There is little to no downtime with Restylane-L injections. You may notice some bruising, tenderness, or swelling, but those side effects will subside on their own within a day or two. You will want to avoid excess sun exposure, alcohol, strenuous activity, and makeup for 24 hours.

As for results, you will be able to see improvements immediately. The results will continue to improve over the next several months as your body builds up collagen. Results typically last for 6  to 18 months. You can receive maintenance treatment every 6-18 months as needed, or never if you love how you look.

Frequently Asked Questions About Restylane-L

How is Restylane-L different from other fillers or other Restylane products?

Restylane-L is a very reliable, predictable, and safe Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler. It is said to swell less than some other basic HA fillers, is smooth, and has a high safety profile.

What specific concerns or areas can Restylane-L treat on the face?

Restylane-L is a versatile and safe, reliable hyaluronic acid filler. It can be used for cheeks, acne scars, other depressed scars, lips, and when used by very experienced, highly trained physician specialists, can be used for under eye areas and temples.

Who is considered a good candidate for Restylane-L treatments?

Most people are potential candidates for Restylane-L filler. See your own board-certified dermatologist for an in person consultation so she can discuss your medical history and your concerns with you one on one.

What should I do to prepare for my Restylane-L appointment?

Dr. Jessica Krant asks that you do not exercise for 24 hours after filler placement, so do your exercise early before your appointment!

How long does a typical Restylane-L appointment take from start to finish?

The length of a filler appointment with any filler, including Restylane-L, will be affected by whether you are a brand new patient or an existing patient (paperwork and consultation discussion with your dermatologist), whether you have numbing cream applied before your treatment or go without (much quicker!), and how many areas are being treated. Dr. Jessica Krant is known for her attention to detail and approaching filler treatments as an art. She does not rush. Your appointment could last anywhere from 15 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the above factors.

How soon will I see the results of Restylane-L?

Dermal filler treatments, including Restylane treatments, show immediate results. But results do settle in and continue to improve in the following week or two as immediate swelling and small bruises may resolve.

How long do the results of Restylane-L usually last?

Everyone is different. Results of dermal filler treatments, including Restylane-L, last from 6 months to a few years. But the reality is that every filler treatment includes small needle pokes, which each trigger your own natural collagen to build as well. Good, conservative, natural looking filler treatments that are not overdone, contribute to long-lasting support and potentially some slowing of skin aging.

How often will I need Restylane-L maintenance treatments, and what happens if I stop getting them?

Each person’s skin is individual. If filler is not overdone and is used conservatively, maintenance may be needed within 6 months or even not for a few years. If you ever stop getting filler, your face will continue its natural aging process, and your hyaluronic acid fillers, as long as they were placed properly in the first place, should stay in place or gradually be absorbed by your body. The one area with some caveat is the under eye area. For this reason, Dr. Krant has become more conservative over the years in treating this area, which may be more prone to having old filler begin to show over time.
