Everything You Need to Know About Laser Rejuvenation

At her New York City office, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jessica Krant offers a number of laser rejuvenation treatments to help you achieve the smooth, youthful look you want. But what exactly is laser rejuvenation? Are there different types of lasers? And what about side effects from these treatments? To find answers to these questions, keep reading below to learn everything you need to know about laser rejuvenation.

What is laser rejuvenation?

Laser rejuvenation, also called laser resurfacing, is a technique that involves directing short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. The goal is to create a controlled injury to the skin by heating the deep dermis. By doing so, cells called fibroblasts are stimulated to form new collagen and elastin, two proteins that increase the turgor and firmness of the skin. Thus, laser rejuvenation is used to treat a variety of skin conditions and remove effects of photoaging such as wrinkles, spots, and textures.

Types of lasers

There are many different types of lasers that can be used which can be divided into two main categories: ablative and nonablative. Ablative lasers, such as CO2 and Erbium, use high-energy light to burn away damaged skin, whereas non-ablative lasers can specifically target the treatment areas while leaving the surrounding skin intact. Due to the risk of scarring, hypopigmentation, and other side effects with ablative lasers, Dr. Krant only utilizes non-ablative lasers with her patients.

Below are the different types of nonablative lasers used by Dr. Krant for laser rejuvenation:

  • PicoSure® FOCUS™
  • Clear + Brilliant
  • Fraxel® DUAL
  • Cutera excel™
  • Intensed Pulsed Light (IPL)

The best part about these laser rejuvenation treatments is that they require little to no downtime, with only minor side effects such as redness and slight swelling.
