How to Find the Right Dermatologist for You

Choosing a new doctor, no matter your concern, can be a difficult process. This is especially true if you are new to an area or have changing needs regarding your health. In a recent webinar, Dr. Krant answered some questions about choosing the right dermatologist for your needs. Whether or not you are local to New York City, here are some considerations when selecting the best dermatologist for you.

Consider Your Dermatology Needs

Before you search for a dermatologist, consider what your primary needs are when seeing a dermatologist. Are you looking for medical, surgical, or cosmetic treatment? Perhaps you need a combination of these services to maintain both your health and appearance. Many dermatologists will specialize in multiple treatment areas, while others are primarily focused on a narrow range of treatments. For example, Dr. Krant has specialized experience in cosmetic, laser, surgical, and medical dermatology and can help patients who have a wide range of skin concerns. At Dr. Krant’s office, patients can choose from advanced cosmetic treatment options like laser facials or injectables to address signs of aging, scarring, or other aesthetic issues.

Search for a Dermatologist Near You

No matter where you are located, it is best to choose a dermatologist who maintains board certification. To achieve board certification, dermatologists must hold at least eight years of education and training, complete 12,000-16,000 hours of patient care, and pass examinations. A dermatologist may be board certified through the American Board of Dermatology, American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, depending on where and how they were trained.

For patients outside of New York City, Dr. Krant recommends using AAD.org to search for a board-certified dermatologist. You can search by your location or by a doctor’s name if you have received a recommendation from someone you know.

You can also read online reviews of a dermatologist on their website, Google reviews, Yelp, or other sites, but it can also be beneficial to rely on reviews from people in your own life over those of strangers online. A recommendation from a family member, friend, or your primary care doctor is typically more reliable when it comes to choosing a new doctor.

Review Your Dermatologist’s Experience and Certification

Once you have found a dermatologist who you are considering, read more about their personal experience, training, and certification through their website. For example, on our Art of Dermatology website, you can learn that Dr. Krant has won multiple awards including being recognized as a New York Magazine Top Doctor, Castle Connolly Top Doctor, and winning the Best of Manhattan Award in Dermatology. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and American College of Mohs Surgery in addition to being Certified in Lifestyle Medicine by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. Finally, Dr. Krant was educated and trained by top institutions including Harvard College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her dermatology residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where she later taught residents, and completed a fellowship with the American College of Mohs Surgery.

Before you schedule your first appointment, you can get to know Dr. Krant and learn more about dermatology by listening to her podcast, Save Your Own Skin. By listening, you can learn more about Dr. Krant’s approach to dermatology and medicine as well as other health topics like plant-based nutrition and lifestyle, neuroscience, anti-aging, mindfulness, and more.
