Get Smart about Skincare

Your skin is your body’s largest organ and your first line of defense against infection, but how much do you really understand about your skin? Is it oily? Dry? Normal? Combination? Understanding your skin’s type is only the first step to improving your skin’s condition. You then have to research what ingredients will work for your unique needs, and how your skin will react to different products. This can be confusing and overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Read on for tips on getting smart about skincare.

Know Your Skin’s Needs

As you start to understand your skin type, you should also start to research which ingredients, products and treatments will be the most beneficial for your skin. As well intentioned as your friends are, what’s good for them may not be good for you, so take recommendations with a grain of salt. A great place to start is to look for products recommended or tested by dermatologists. This way you know that these products are safe and effective. You should also take it a step further and visit your dermatologist if you are feeling overwhelmed with different products. A board certified dermatologist will help you establish a routine, and explain what works and what will not.

Get Smart!

New products hit the market all the time, especially this time of year. All of them claim to be the product that will change your life, packed with new and exciting ingredients that you’ve never heard of before. Most of the time these are unsubstantiated marketing claims. Before you buy, do your research! Don’t be swept up in the beautiful packages and fancy ingredients. While trying new products is fun and exciting, your skin health needs to be top priority, so invest in products that utilize proven, effective ingredients. If you do want to try something new, ask for a sample before you splurge and patch test on a small area of skin for a few days before applying it to your whole face.
