Botox vs. Dysport: Which is Best?

Botox vs. Dysport: Which is Best?

Patients who have dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that form and worsen through facial expressions, can turn to neuromodulator injections to create a more youthful look. Two of the most popular neuromodulator products are Botox and Dysport, both of which are offered by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jessica Krant at Art of Dermatology. If you are new to injectables, it can be difficult to decide which product is best for you, which is why we’d like to set out the basics of the conversation you’ll have with Dr. Krant when choosing either Dysport or Botox.

Comparing Botox and Dysport

Both Botox and Dysport are neurotoxin injectables which work using botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze the muscles. The trace amounts of active ingredient differ slightly between each product’s formula, which can make one or the other more effective for different patients.

It’s a myth that Dysport is a “lighter” formula than Botox. At the end of the day, you’d receive the same amount of botulinum toxin in either case when you’re being treated with a highly experienced injector, which is why Dr. Krant always tells people to seek out board-certified dermatologists to perform neuromodulator procedures. This ensures you not only can have confidence in the safety of the procedure, but also that you’ll get the best results with the most conservative amount of product.

Does Botox or Dysport Last Longer?

Both Botox and Dysport results are temporary because the body will naturally rebuild the muscle receptors that are damaged by the botulinum toxin. The actual product is metabolized by your body fairly quickly, but the receptors take time to be rebuilt and start receiving the nerve signals from the brain again. Some patients will also see variation in how long their results last depending on where they had injections or how much product was used.

On average, the results of Dysport and Botox injections last the same amount of time: on average, three months. Some patients discover that one formula lasts longer than the other, which prompts them to switch to that formula permanently. When treatments last longer, you end up saving money in the long run, since you won’t need to come in for as many maintenance procedures.

Am I a Better Candidate for Botox or Dysport?

Determining whether you are better suited to Botox or Dysport should be done with the advice of an experienced physician injector like Dr. Krant. For any neuromodulator, patients should consult with their physician if they have allergies, are pregnant, suffer from autoimmune conditions, or have any other underlying health issues.

During a consultation, Dr. Krant will review your health history, examine the treatment area, and recommend the specific neuromodulator that is best suited for your skin condition and goals.

At the end of the day, if you’re new to injectables, try one of the products and analyze your results. If you’re happy, there’s really no reason to switch. If you have a bad reaction to the product, or your results are unsatisfactory, the great news is that you may have an alternative that will work better for you.
