Which Chemical Peel Is Right for You?

Winter in NYC is the ideal season to refresh your skin with a safe chemical peel performed personally by your own dermatologist. Between cooler temperatures and reduced sun exposure, your skin can recover more comfortably while achieving a smoother texture and a radiant glow. If you’ve ever considered rejuvenating your complexion, now is the perfect time to explore which peel is best suited for your skin type and goals.

Why Winter Is the Best Season for Chemical Peels

During winter, the sun’s UV rays are less intense, minimizing the risk of post-peel sensitivity and pigmentation changes. Your skin naturally spends more time indoors, allowing it to heal more efficiently after exfoliation treatments. Many patients use these months to tackle sunspots, fine lines, and uneven tone that developed during the summer. Choosing a peel now helps reveal brighter, healthier skin in time for spring.

Understanding Different Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels use a carefully balanced solution to remove the top layers of damaged skin, stimulating the formation of new, healthy cells beneath the surface. Under the expert care of Dr. Jessica Krant, a board-certified dermatologist in NYC, patients can choose from several customized options based on their skin tone, texture, and sensitivity. Chemical peels have been used for decades in skin rejuvenation, and it’s important to understand that strengths and risks vary widely among them.

Peels come in three different strength categories: Deep, Medium, and Superficial. Deep peels require sedation and have high risks of infection and scarring. These should be performed only by extremely experienced physicians who have you under very close supervision. Recovery can take weeks to months. Medium depth peels also come with high risk of permanent scarring and should be taken very seriously. These as well should be performed only in a medical office setting by a very experienced, trained physician who understands your skin type and the properties of the peel chemicals. Superficial peels are the least dangerous and most flexible of peels. These do also come with risks of burns, scars, permanent discoloration, and infection, but are more forgiving. Dr. Krant only performs superficial peels in her Manhattan office. In the office, she uses three proprietary superficial peels of different strengths and depths of action:

Illuminize Peel

The Illuminize Peel® is a light, gentle peel that is perfect for first-time patients or those with sensitive skin seeking a subtle glow. The Illuminize Peel brightens dull complexions, smooths minor texture irregularities, and leaves your skin more luminous after just one treatment with virtually no downtime. It’s a great choice before special events (even same day!) or as part of your regular skincare maintenance. This is sometimes referred to as a red carpet peel or a lunchtime peel.

Vitalize Peel

The Vitalize Peel® is a deeper superficial peel treatment designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, and sun damage. It provides noticeable results after one session and can be part of a series for more assertive rejuvenation. This peel uses a unique blend of alpha and beta hydroxy acids to encourage collagen production and skin renewal ideal for anyone seeking smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

Rejuvenize Peel

For those with more advanced signs of aging or sun damage, the Rejuvenize Peel® offers dramatic skin improvement with each treatment. This is Dr. Krant’s “deepest” superficial peel and targets pigmentation, rough texture, and fine lines, revealing a radiant, even complexion. While mild flaking may occur post-treatment, recovery is quick, and results continue to improve over several days. In the office, Dr. Krant will start with the gentler peels and graduate you up to the Rejuvenize Peel as tolerated.
