JUVÉDERM® vs. Restylane®: What’s the Difference?

In previous blog posts we’ve talked about how dermal fillers are a very popular cosmetic procedure because they can produce dramatic, rejuvenative aesthetic improvements that were previously only achievable with surgery. Plus, dermal fillers are less costly than surgery and have limited-to-no recovery time. Currently, JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® are the two leading choices of dermal fillers. So how do you choose which one is best for you? Of course, scheduling a consultation with Dr. Krant is your best way to know which treatment option is best for your specific needs and goals. Until then, keep reading to learn more about the difference between JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®.

Similarities

Both JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® are approved by the FDA to be safe and effective cosmetic injectables. These fillers contain hyaluronic acid synthesized by bacteria and not extracted from an animal source, as is sometimes believed. Hyaluronic acid is a large sugar molecule that is naturally found throughout the body and is most abundant in the skin. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to attract and bind water, which keeps the skin hydrated as well as giving it volume. Both JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® offer several different products that were developed for specific treatment areas, such as the nasolabial folds (the grooves between the nose and the lips), the marionette lines (creases extending from the corners of the mouth downward around the chin), the lips, frown lines around the brow, and more.

Similarities

Differences

One difference between JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® has to do with consistency. JUVÉDERM® is a smooth consistency gel while Restylane is a particulate or granular gel. Furthermore, JUVÉDERM® readily diffuses into the tissues while Restylane® is more cohesive and tends to stay where it is placed. There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these consistencies. For instance, an advantage of the cohesive nature of Restylane® is that is can be used to build up volume in the face in a way that JUVÉDERM® cannot. However, lumps can be expected with Restylane®, which must be actively smoothed out during the procedure.

Another difference between JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® is duration. JUVÉDERM® contains 35 percent more cross-linked hyaluronic acid than Restylane®, which creates a slightly more complex formulation that some find to be longer lasting. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the duration of any type of filler also depends on the individual since some people have faster rates of absorption than others.

As a board-certified dermatologic surgeon with many years of experience with these products, Dr. Krant will assess your specific needs and goals in order to determine whether JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® is right for you.
