Restylane®

What is Restylane?

Restylane is a cosmetic filler that is an injectable gel formulation of hyaluronic acid specifically designed to act like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and lost volume.

The Restylane brand is a family of products with specific formulations intended to help restore lost facial volume to enhance the facial contour as well as fill in facial wrinkles and folds. The specific formula of Restylane that’s right for you depends on your previous experiences with other dermal fillers, your specific facial concerns, such as nasolabial folds or wanting more enhanced lip volume, and your overall health.

Areas and Concerns Treated By The Restylane Family of Fillers

Restylane fillers are FDA-approved for mid to deep injection in various areas of the face, jaw, and lips. The different formulas correspond to different ideal use scenarios. Dr. Krant uses some of these formulas and will evaluate which ones are appropriate for you.

  • Restylane – correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Also suitable for injection into the lips.
  • Restylane-L – Restylane formulated with local anesthesia Lidocaine for more comfort.
  • Restylane Lyft – a slightly more resilient formula to correct severe deep facial wrinkles as well as cheek augmentation or to replace lost volume.
  • Restylane Silk – correction for wrinkles around the mouth and lip augmentation.
  • Restylane Kysse – lip enhancement and correcting perioral wrinkles.
  • Restylane Defyne – correction of moderate to severe facial lines as well as chin augmentation.
  • Restylane Refyne – correction of mild to moderate facial wrinkles or folds.
  • Restylane Contour – specifically designed for cheek augmentation and midface contour deficiencies.

The Restylane® Procedure

As with all dermal filler procedures, you will first discuss your needs and goals with Dr. Krant during an initial consultation. Together, you can design a treatment plan to help you achieve your cosmetic goals, with or without hyaluronic acid fillers.

At your treatment appointment, Dr. Krant will precisely inject the Restylane solution into the desired areas, after an optional application of numbing cream. The length of time for each treatment session can vary, depending on how many areas are being treated. For most women and men, Restylane injections take about 10 to 30 minutes to complete.

After treatment, there is no downtime, so you can return to your normal daily activities right away. However, it is recommended that you avoid sunlight and strenuous exercise immediately after your procedure.

Restylane® Before & After

Restylane Before & After

Restylane® Results & Recovery

After treatment, you may experience some common temporary effects, including swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness throughout the injection site. These are typically mild and generally last fewer than 7 days. You can apply a cold compress or ice pack to the area within the first 24 hours after injections to help minimize swelling and bruising.

As these effects diminish on their own over the next few days, your smooth final results will reveal themselves.

Am I a candidate for Restylane®?

Restylane is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to look refreshed and improve the appearance of wrinkles and lost volume without surgery. At your consultation, Dr. Krant will review your relevant health factors and discuss a realistic treatment plan that suits your goals.

Can Restylane cause nerve damage?

Nerve damage typically presents as numbness and pain. This is a risk of any injection, and it simply occurs because the needle pokes the underlying nerves. This should subside within a few weeks to months.

Will the Usage of Night Creams Affect Restylane Results?

After cosmetic injectable treatments, many patients are carefully trying to not touch anything, but be reassured: If you are gentle with your application of creams and washing your face, you wont hurt anything! Keep in mind that most anti-aging creams truly do very little other than plump up the outer layers of skin as a moisturizer, smoothing the appearance of wrinkles. Only a few truly biologically change the skin, and even fewer have proven this to the FDA, so they can avoid the expense and hassle of having to be regulated and marketed as a drug rather than a cosmetic!

Does Kissing Distort the Appearance of Restylane or Make the Product Break Down ?

After getting lip fillers, it is recommended to would wait a day or two before heavy kissing, but the gel itself wont break down faster than normal with lots of kissing. Depending on how much is injected, there is a very small chance it could be slightly manipulated into different locations, but do not worry about that too much, especially after several days.

Can Restylane and Botox Be Applied Safely in Different Areas at the Same Time?

Restylane (or Juvederm) and Botox (or Dysport) can be used together on the same day with no trouble at all. Using the filler and neuromodulators in different areas poses no issue, and they can often be used synergistically to help problems together in one area like the glabella or upper lip area (not too much Botox!).

How can I prevent bruising from Restylane?

There is no way to guarantee zero risk of bruising, even with the most careful technique by the most skilled and appropriate injector, but there are several tricks to minimize risk. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and other similar medications for two weeks prior to treatment. Use ice packs right after treatment and even later that day on and off. Do not exercise on the same day after your treatment. Make sure you see an experienced and conscientious board-certified core specialty physician.

What Determines the Needle Size in Restylane?

Generally, the needle size of the fillers has stayed the same (smaller needle for the thinner fillers, bigger needle for the thicker ones), but there has been some advancement in the details of the needle engineering and design that are intended to handle the fillers for a smoother delivery and more reliable performance. However, of course, with more experience over years of use, techniques have also advanced over the years.

Can I fly after getting Restylane?

There are no limits on flying after filler treatment. However, the altitude may impact bruising, so it's best to wait a day or two. This also keeps you in the proximity of your injector in case you have any concerns.

Does Restylane swell more than Juvederm?

Although each injector will have a different answer, Restylane and Juvederm tend to produce the same amount of swelling after injection. The amount of swelling can depend more on the placement and technique than the exact product used.

How Long Until I See the Effects of Restylane?

If you have recently had Restylane injected and dont feel fully corrected, see your board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon for an evaluation. You may simply need more filler, or filler placed differently.

Which is better for eye spasms, Restylane or Dysport?

Dysport and Botox are the medications of choice for unwanted muscle spasms, including around the eyes. Fillers like Restylane will not be able to treat spasms and can only fill in hollow areas in the skin.

Which is safer, Juvederm or Restylane?

Both options have a great safety profile when used by a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Can I get Restylane if I have Rosacea?

Its generally safe to get hyaluronic acid injectable fillers placed even with rosacea, especially if youre just considering upper lip injection and not also cheeks. Melolabial (nasolabial) fold and cheek injections could potentially temporarily create some pinkness which might be construed as a rosacea flare, but should not be of long-term concern. Doxycycline, often given for acne or rosacea, should not have any consequences relating to injectable fillers, and definitely will have no impact on bruising.
